Physics of Life
In this series, I wanted to create work that could communicate the idea of shifting dimensions, inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave, and informed by Rudolf Steiner’s theory that we are in fact beings of six dimensions or more. Light and shadow have played an important part in the work, as a means to draw parallels between a physical object and it’s shadow, with our physical bodies and our consciousness.
We think we exist in three physical dimensions and there is nothing more. Perhaps there is much more, we simply cannot experience it.
The figures drawn onto the surface of the plastic in The Physics of Life series began life on a flat, two-dimensional plane. By moulding and curving the plastic it acquired a third dimension, contorting the figures and changing their aspect. The line drawing, however, still only exists on the two-dimensional surface and will never inhabit the third dimension. Hence the title for the range of sculptures - Stuck and Stuck in 3D.
With light, the shadow-drawings that emerge add another dimension to the work, blurring the lines between where the sculpture ends and the shadows begin, much like the ambiguity that currently exists at the boundary between consciousness and brain.
